So you went back in time, why, just to not take your dream job and not date your dream man?”Sadie shrunk a little. “Well when you put it that way.””Exactly. You’re looking at it all wrong.” Carrie pulled the pen cap off and stuck it to the bottom then drew some squiggles in the corner of the legal pad to get the ink flowing. Then she wrote the Do-Over list at the top in big, bold letters and underlined it.”I am?””Definitely. You’re putting too much pressure on yourself. Just focusing on the big things. Think about the small stuff. You need to be out there doing all the crazy shit you didn’t do last time around. You need to take more risks, if anything.

Call me a hippie, but I hope my main message is one of empathy. I want my young listeners to hear other points of view and feel the challenges all different kinds of people (and creatures) face. I know they’re goofy stories and I fall back on a few tropes, but I try to be socially responsible on the whole. Empathetic children are the future champions of kindness and equality. They can look outside of themselves and find joy and wonder at the simple beauties in this often ugly world. In lieu of that, I hope they all learn great pirate voices.

I’ve never been hugged before. I don’t know anyone who has. For as long as I can remember, the world has been full of people shying away from physical contact. There are no accidental touches without immediate apology, shame, and a little bit of fear. The law is meant to keep us safe. I know that as well as anyone does. Before touch was outlawed, virus and disease ran rampant. I know why the law exists. I know how it helps. Still, I wonder if the history of the human race is nothing but a list of ‘thou shalt not’s scribbled onto massive stone tablets. What was it like to touch someone on purpose? I wish I knew. I’d like to know. It isn’t enough to imagine anymore. I need to go see for myself.
